H5000 vs Garmin + Expedition for live performance data?
I'm considering switching to H5000. For now I have a mix based on H2000 with many H5000 compatible components .... my current setup has three 20/20 mast displays + 1 FFD on the mast allowing me to display data for 5 different values.
My standard up wind set up would be BSP + TARGET SPEED + AWA + POL% + VMG%
My standard down wind set up would be BSP + TWA + OPT WA + POL% + VMG%
For a new setup i like the Garmin GNX 120 mast displays, allowing me to show up to 3 values in each compared to only 1 in B&G 20/20 (my boat is a 38ft Prima, so I do not need very large numbers)
From what I understand - the Garmin GNX 120 cannot take TARGET SPEED / OPT WA / POL% / VMG% from H5000 as they are not standard N2K sentences interpreted by Garmin. However from what I understand they can take user specified data from Expedition.
Is there a way to get H5000 performance data directly to Garmin displays that I’ve missed? If not what are the pros and cons for using Expedition to feed Garmin with performance data vs. using H5000 to feed B&G 20/20 with the data directly from H5000?
In either case I would have a H5000 Hercules main CPU to be able to inlude the 3D motion correction for wind.
My Expedition setup is on a Dell rugged tablet (hot swappable batteries for continuous operation) with a Yacht Devices Wi-Fi gateway connection.
Expedition Help File, search box "Garmin" and select Garmin NMEA 2000. This gives details for Tx of Expedition Channels to the N2k connected Garmin custom channels via a device such as the Actisense NGT-1.
So a second connection to Expedition from your instruments is required (H5000 via ethernet, N2k via USB). Just be careful to tell the N2k port to not Rx any data - the H5000 ethernet connection will be better for this.
